Orange may not be an acquired taste when it comes to juice, but the color itself certainly is. Unless you are wild about the color, it is difficult to imagine that orange decor could ever be pretty. That is why so many of us tend to cringe when we think about autumnal decorating, at least if it extends to more than centerpieces and accessories. But look at how warm this room is; observe how the varying shades of orange blend together perfect, making the room simultaneously cozy and somehow intriguing. This is something that you can enjoy all year round, if you are willing to think about the possibilities. But introducing it during the fall is certainly a winner.

Home wall decor is one of he many major elements in home interiors that decide the kind of mood, the space will finally create when it gets finished. The reason for this is quite obvious. Wall occupies a major visual field in the interiors of any building. Wall decor can be carried out in every imaginable way, you can think of. However some of the most common ways to decorating a wall are. 1) Plastering and painting the wall 2) Applying a wallpaper on the wall 3) Cladding the wall with tiles 4) Keeping the wall exposed (exposed brick walls) 5) Keeping the wall without plastering 6) Creating a mural on the wall Which type you want to go for, largely depends upon what end effect you want to create. It must be noted that every wall decor finish will have a major impact on the interior design theme of your home. But how to really choose the best finish for wall decor? To solve this problem you can think from different perspectives. Wall surfaces are vertical surfaces and help in two ways. The first and the most obvious function of a wall is to act as a divider between two rooms and create privacy. Secondly walls help to reflect direct sunlight into deeper areas of the interior spaces creating an even lighting atmosphere. For this to happen it is necessary to finish the wall with the kind of decor that will help easy dispersion of light into internal areas.

culture vultures

culture vultures or artists?
what do u think.

reprint:

Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, the favorites for ice-dancing gold in Vancouver, wowed the crowds with their routine at the European Championships. They sit in the lead after their original dance, a tribute to Australian Aborigines.

Except, Aboriginal leaders don't see it as a tribute. They don't really see how it has anything to do with their culture at all.

"They have got the whole thing wrong," said Stephen Page, artistic director of the respected indigenous group, the Bangarra Dance Company. Page said there were no traditional movements in the routine, the music sounded more like it came from India or Africa than Aboriginal Australia and the body paint looked like "a three-year-old child had drawn it on"... "Probably the elders in the bush would be laughing because they would be saying, 'Look how stupid these fellas are,' " he said.

Domnina and Shabalin are required to do an original dance that is representative of a country's culture. The U.S. pair of Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, who won silver in Torino, perform a Moldavian folk dance. Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie Davis won the Grand Prix Final with an Indian-inspired dance.

The dances are not required to be strict interpretations of the culture -- they are meant to represent those cultures -- but Domnina and Shabalin completely miss the mark. At this point, it's likely too late for the pair to change their routine. Hopefully, an Australian will be on the panel who judges their original dance, and marks their unauthentic and offensive dances and costumes accordingly.

modern woman eddie ross

i like this. rock the vote 4 him!
blog post reprint:

from coco and kelly

Now that I'm an official window-dresser myself, I'm even more interested in the challenges and inspiration that come from creating store windows, so of course I've been following Eddie Ross' blog posts on the window he's designed for Elle Decor as a part of the Big Window Challenge...
Well, the sweetheart he is, Eddie sent over some gorgeous detail shots of the window so that we could get an inside peek at the styling! (If you want to see the whole room first, pop over here.) I love the lived-in feel from strewn magazines and his contrasts of antique with modern. The details in the window are insane - like the hand-painted faux bois flooring (the color is Aura, Fiji). And talk about brave - how about that wallpaper! Apparently, Eddie always had a sample of it pinned to his inspiration board at House Beautiful and Martha Stewart, but never had a chance to incorporate it, so when this opportunity arrived, he jumped at the chance...
I think my favorite area of the window might be the bookshelf. Or, should I say, bar shelf? By using the chinoiserie blue vases against the splatter blue wallpaper, Eddie created an eclectic look that's still easy on the eyes. Take that as a tip, m'dears! However, the one part that stands out is the simple bar setup... Check it out.
I loooooove the vintage brass flowers. I've been eying some at the antique store down the street and this setup makes me want to get 'em asap! Love that he used another condensed color scheme here with the brass and orange, too.
The main focal point is obviously the sitting area of the room. The sofa, pillows and artwork are completely over the top, but balanced by the fresh white chairs flanking either side. All the colors in the room are used right here, combining bold modern prints with antique textiles and classic furniture lines. The lamps are a stunning blue with custom shades made by Susan Schneider with Shandell’s in Millerton out of goldleaf wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries.
One thing Eddie and I have in common is our love of entertaining, so of course this room would not be complete without glasses on the coffee table ready to pour! And we all know how much I love a mirrored coffee table.

Now's the fun part people! Hop over to Apartment Therapy to see the other two windows and then cast your vote for your favorite! You can also text your vote to 89800, and use the number 1 to vote for Eddie. (What is this, American Idol???) Obviously, I'm a little biased, but I think Eddie did a fantastic job of creating a window that not only reflects his design aesthetic, but also speaks to the style of Elle Decor. For a little contrast, Maxwell's window is a very cozy saturated library scene. Worth a peek!

Famous Modern Design Home Decorating Styleunique modern design retro decor home decorating ideas

Every design must be bold and stand out, but not to the point at which it overwhelms the viewer. Go for “funky” looks that are strange but unique at the same time. Furniture in a retro style room tries to appear as outstanding as possible. When it comes to sofas, look for elongated styles and make sure there are lots of colorful pillows. Also, as a quick side note, don’t go for big design when decorating with retro themes as it may interfere with the effectiveness of the vibrant, bold colors. Instead of picture designs, focus on puzzle-piece looks and things of that nature. The best colors to use are avocado green and mustard yellow. Combine these with some simple tie-dye fabric and presto you’re set! If you’re not a fan of tie-dye, try checkered patterns. When it comes to textures, the more the merrier. Go for soft, rough, and fluffed designs. Anything is good. Scoop stools, skate tables, fuzzy throw rugs, and lava lamps are all part of the wide assortment of décor you’re going to want your retro themed area to have. Foreign sculptures are also great. Wood and checker tile flooring are also predominantly the best choices. Look for clean, swift looks for flooring as everything else will be bright and fantastically insane. Just remember that with retro, anything goes! Multiple pieces always match and will help amplify your design to its fullest.

Residential home lighting breathes life into your home and its surroundings. Using decorative lighting is another way of enhancing the beauty and character of the house. While selecting residential lighting fixtures, one important point to be remembered is that the lights chosen for the interior and the exterior of the house complement each other. Residential lighting includes the areas to be lighted inside and around a house.

Modern Style Design Home Decorgreat home decorating tips from this influencial interior designer

We chatted with interior designer Mark Langos, of MarkLangos.com, about the beautiful home he designed that we featured in our May issue. Here, he continues his thoughts about interior design and what makes for a great living space. What's the first thing you thought about when you began this project? There are several factors I take into consideration, but it all comes down to the needs of the client. For this house, my clients have very hectic lives and wanted a calming space to relax and unwind. In the large living room, they often entertain both on an intimate and large scale. Dividing the room into distinct spaces that can function independently or as one was key.My clients love to play games (cards, board games) so it was imperative that I include a games table in their home. They can play a game at the table in the center of the space and enjoy the larger area surrounding them, relax with a great book or cocktails by the fire, or entertain a bigger group using all portions of the room (even opening up the doors to include the outdoors). What's the best way to stay on budget? Paint is really the most cost effective way to transform a space. Consider the color in the space with morning, afternoon and evening light, as each will change the color's intensity and shade. It is a good idea to paint a 12" x 12" swatch on the wall to see. Use a minimum of 2 to 3 coats of paint to properly cover and convey the correct color of the swatch. Another trick is to tape sheets of white paper around the perimeter of the swatch this way you are not looking at color against the existing wall color. For those who are able to spend a little more money, I am using more and more wallpaper in my work. It is a great alternative to paint; it adds texture, depth and can even change the scale of a room. What are the best "investment" items? Invest in quality upholstered pieces. They are something that will be with you for a long time. I also believe that large pieces in a room should remain neutral. It is much easier to change out the pillows and throws than to reupholster your sofa. A good piece of furniture can easily have many lives by updating accents and accessories or simple reupholstery. I think that successful design (and real life) is a mixture of elements within a space. Most rooms I design contain a mixture of elements from custom designed pieces to great retail finds ranging in price high to low. It is inevitable that the less-expensive accessory gets commented on because it is in a well edited, cohesive environment and sitting on a beautiful table.

Modern Style Design Home DecorLuxury Design French Style Home Decor

When you’re choosing an interior designer whose style is French style home décor, your first decision is how authentic your want the décor to be. Some want every detail picture-perfect; while others want a hint of French in the fabrics, furniture or accessories. Whether your idea of French style is formal or country, part of the fun is knowing where to shop and how to get the most style for your dollar. If you’re interested in antiques, then your best buy will be at auction; if style is more important than provenance, you’ll have a world of choices. My only suggestion: instead of being slavish, adapt French style to your style. Designer Previews will show you the work of many of the finest designers of French style home décor and help you compare their styles in relation to your needs.

Ethnic decor pieces can be found in all kinds of unexpected places. You’ll find them in specialty furnishing stores and on the web, but often some of the best treasures are from garage sales and thrift stores. Look for unique textures that catch the eye - woven, carved, or molded knick knacks will make a big statement, as will fabric that is embroidered, dyed, or sewn by hand. Some ethnic and ethnic-looking items are readily available at local shops across the United States, such as Mexican pottery, interesting baskets, or painted masks. Other items are more difficult to find. If you are traveling internationally, keep an eye out for beautiful items that might not be traditionally associated with decorating - a silk kimono from an Asian country, a woven hat from Central America, or wooden clogs from Europe - these can all be mounted on the wall or displayed on a shelf as a wonderful conversation piece about your adventure.

We all love beautiful things. So, our homes must be the one of them, and therefore, the home décor is very important. Most of us enjoy making our homes more than a mere structure made up of four walls and a roof. Home decor styles range from a number of themes, designs, and materials. While planning your home decor project, you can either opt for the theme being implemented throughout the house or use one specific theme for a specific room. For example, a house was once designed in such a way that each room was decorated with the styles of the different countries the home owner had visited. All rooms included authentic art and furniture from each visited country.

Three years ago, the owners of the building at 100 E. Jefferson St. granted a request from one of the tenants to expand. Easy Street, which previously occupied some of the building, moved a short distance south of the main downtown area to allow for its neighbor to grow its offices. The economy turned sour and the expansion never happened. The space was available again and the store returned, said co-owner Dana Reuter. “We like being downtown,” she said. “This building is better for us.” The extended space includes a solid steel cabinet, an old-style bartending set, a custom-made dollhouse and an entire wall covered with art from co-owner Maria Greene. “This is big, heavy,” Reuter said as she banged her knuckles against the steel cabinet. “It’ll last a lifetime.” She walked one slow lap around the store and randomly pointed to furniture, pottery, crystals, knickknacks and art pieces. There was a serving tray from the Netherlands, a statue from India, a brass and copper table from England, a crystal bird from France and a painting from Russia. Reuter will scrounge up her nose any time someone mentions the Pottery Barn or IKEA. “We get one-of-a-kind things from all over the world,” Reuter said. “We usually don’t deal with new stuff. That way, we make sure it’s one of a kind … Everybody has stuff made in China. We want (unique) stuff here.” Most of the items at the store are either on consignment or are bought at estate sales. Not all the pieces are still available for purchase. Easy Street has a layaway system. It also gives customers time to set pickup and delivery schedules. The store itself offers delivery for those who live a short distance away, Reuter said. The 3-foot high dollhouse had a sign on it that read, “Sorry, but I am sold and on my way to a loving home.” “We have a lot more coming in,” said Reuter of her business. “We have a huge area.” She wandered outside to her vehicle and pulled out a cane that was made in 1944. It was unusual because it had a fold-down seat. “You can see this just looks homemade,” Reuter said. “I love stuff like that, because you can’t find it anywhere else. I used to run a charity thrift store (in Land O’ Lakes), so I got to see a lot of strange stuff.” The Spring Hill Art League hosts a monthly wine reception at Easy Street. Wednesday’s gathering will be the first since the store moved to its current location. The event is open to the public and will run from 7 to 9 p.m. The store’s inventory is not only for those serious collectors or affluent shoppers. There is a $5 table at the front of the store and it is constantly being replenished. Reuter said there are at least 30 items sold a week from the table. “We get so many calls from people who say they want to get rid of stuff,” she said. “Some think they can get millions of dollars for something. Others don’t care. They just want to clean out their attics.” Either way, she gets a lot of enjoyment finding unique pieces of décor each and every week. She wants to make extra sure her customers like what they see and keep coming back. “Would you want to shop here?” she asked a couple of men outside her shop. “Wouldn’t you want to tell your friends about this place?

There are many ways to decorate a home inside and out; there are also some that can be used in both places like candles. They can be used inside to make a room appear warm and inviting and they can be used outside to set a mood of romance among the aroma and beauty of nature. Home décor is as diverse as the family that lives in the home, some people like the appeal of the modern décor and home accents while others find beauty in Victorian home accents or antiques. There are a few things that will help to determine what type of accents will look right in a home, there is the furnishings to consider, the colors of the walls, the amount of light in the room and materials. If a room in a home has dark colored walls and modern furnishings then Victorian accents may not bring the warmth and appeal the person would like. However, if the walls are a deep color and the furnishings are a Victorian style then Victorian accents would do well in this room to give it a finished look. Home accents come in many different materials such as glass, wood, metal, stone and others, which means that there is some type of home accent to complement any furnishings. Glass and metal often fit will with modern furnishings, while colored glass, wood or even stone will fit well with Victorian or antique furnishings.
